Watch: A trailer for JJ Abrams’ secret Cloverfield sequel exists!

In 2008, JJ Abrams, humble TV producer and director of Mission: Impossible III, unleashed a sleeper monster movie called Cloverfield upon the world. The movie quickly amassed a rabid cult fan base and now, 8 years later, Abrams – who has since gone on to become one of the biggest directors in the world with Star Wars: The Force Awakens - has just revealed the long awaited sequel to Cloverfield is not only shot and ready, but also only 3 months away from release.

Collider.com broke the story after reports of a mysterious trailer being played before screenings of the new Michael Bay movie 13 Hours started swirling. It was for a film called 10 Cloverfield Lane. When Collider reached out to Paramount Pictures for a comment, they got one from the big man himself: “The idea came up a long time ago during production. We wanted to make it a blood relative of Cloverfield. The idea was developed over time. We wanted to hold back the title for as long as possible,” said JJ Abrams.

The film stars John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr. They’re all cooped up in some mysterious nuclear bunker, living a happy life until ‘something’ happens. Winstead previously revealed to Collider that she was shooting a post-apocalyptic film about a woman who wakes up in a cellar where she’s being kept prisoner by John Goodman. So basically a sci-fi Room. This trailer has all the trademarks of a JJ Abrams project. It is shrouded in secrecy, to an almost comical extent here. We literally knew nothing about this a few hours ago and now we have a trailer. And boy, does it look exciting!

Dan Trachtenberg, the YouTube filmmaker behind a viral fan film based on the popular videogame Portal had long been rumoured to be helming a secret project for Bad Robot, Abrams’ production company, and 10 Cloverfield Lane is it. And guess who’s credited as co-writer? It’s Whiplash director Damien Chazelle.

Cloverfield was a true gem and has stayed in the public’s consciousness since taking the world by surprise all those years ago. Its director Matt Reeves has gone on to make two Planet of the Apes movies and Abrams has become a brand in himself. For him and his crew to go and make a movie secretly, especially one that people have been wanting so badly, is nothing short of remarkable in this day and age.

It remains to be seen how this new movie connects with the original, but it totally looks like humanity pretty much lost its battle to the Cloverfield monster. But we won’t have to wait too long: 10 Cloverfield Lane is due for a March 11 release.
