Police received information about the snatching from their control room after which they launched a search for the accused and his accomplice, who were riding a two-wheeler.

A police team was patrolling the expressway when they noticed a man walking on the Sector 31 flyover towards Rajiv Chowk. As the police team closed in on him, the man allegedly jumped off the flyover.

The accused were identified as Shokeen Khan (30) and Mushtakeen Khan of Mewat.

According to the crime investigation agency (CIA) in-charge, they received a tip off that the accused, riding a motorcycle, had snatched a gold chain from Sector 40, near the market and fled towards Sector 31 dividing road.

“We immediately rushed to the spot and deployed teams in the area. We spotted the abandoned two-wheeler and realised that they hadn’t crossed the gates. One of them (Shokeen) hid in a park,” Amit Kumar, the CIA in-charge, said.

The police said in a bid to evade the cops, Shokeen got off the motorbike near the park and asked his accompliance to leave the area on foot. The snatching took place around 5.45pm, police said.

Around 10.50pm, when police teams were patrolling the elevated road, they spotted a man walking towards Rajiv Chowk. Police said when they questioned the man, he tried to flee the spot. However, finding himself surrounded by the police team, he jumped off the flyover near sector 31, police said.

The team rushed him to the Civil hospital where he is currently under treatment. He suffered a fracture and minor injuries, but is stable, a doctor said. Police also recovered a loaded .315 bore countrymade pistol, three live cartridges, three gold chains from his possession.

Shamsher Singh, assistant commissioner of police (crime), said they have written to Nuh police to check the criminal antecedents of the duo. “We found no record (about them) in Gurugram. Although they were wanted in many snatching cases, they were never caught,” Singh said.

He said a person earlier arrested in connection with snatching cases, had named the duo as being involved in such cases. His statement will be recorded once he is certified fit, police said.
