Over 100 trees chopped to widen Sector 49 road

The plan, a long pending demand of people, to widen the road from existing stretch to two-lane dual carriageway is likely to be completed in the next six months.

For cutting the trees, the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) has obtained the required approval from the forest department.

A forest official said that the concerned department has asked the MCG for re-plantation along the road as soon as they finish the road.

“We have given permission to fell 102 trees under the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. As MCG has sought to cut down trees to widen the road, we approved it. We will be planting 1,000 trees in Khutpuri, Sector-4 and 5 which falls under the forest area,” said MD Shina, conservator of forest.

Nearly 103 trees, a few of which are more than a 50 years old, have been uprooted while many others await the same fate.

The trees include Alanthas trees, which grew as much as 40 metres tall.

According to officials, the volume of traffic has increased manifold on the roads which requires to be widened. The road will see 6 metres widening on each side, it will have divider and a footpath as well.
