To help women victims and improve detection of crime, the Gurgaon police will also open two more women police stations — one in the south and another in the west of Gurgaon district, police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar said on Sunday.

“Two more women police stations will be added and they will help the victims across the city to reach out to police. Police officers at other stations are also regularly being made aware of ways to handle sensitive cases and the effort is starting to pay off,” Khirwar said.

According to figures put out by the Gurgaon police, as many as 514 cases were registered at the women police station over the last two years.

“Over 30 accused were arrested from outside the state and it marks the maximum number of arrests from outside the state by any police station in Gurgaon district. Around 107 accused were arrested within 24 hours of the complaints being filed,” Dharna Yadav, ACP, Gurgaon, said.

The police also said that the main objective of the women’s police station is to ensure awareness about crimes against women and ways to prevent them.

“We have carried out awareness and self defence training programmes in over 75 schools in the district. We had several cases in which the couples and their families were almost on the verge of breaking ties, but mediation by our staff helped resolve the disputes,” Kailash Devi, station house officer, women‘s police station.

To mark the occasion, a cultural programme was organised in which students from various schools presented a Ganesh Vandana and a Haryanvi song on Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (a flagship campaign by the Centre’s to ensure welfare girl child). Another group displayed various self-defence skills.
