Gurgaon: Installation of hi-tech cameras on e-way delayed yet again

The project to install 13 high-definition cameras on the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway has been delayed once again — this time because the concessionaire was unable to complete the backend integration work. The failure to calibrate the system, which would have made all the cameras functional, has caused the delay. Earlier too the project had been delayed due to theft of cables.

This is despite the fact that concessionaire MCEPL was given a 10-day period to complete the work. The period ended on Tuesday.
Until now, only seven cameras have become fully functional and the feed can be monitored on the screen at the control room at Sirhaul plaza.
During a meeting with National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) officials, the concessionaire has asked for one more month to complete the project, but no formal decision was taken on the request. However, given the circumstances, it is likely that an extension would be granted.
MCEPL official Visvajeet said the reason for the initial delay was the theft of cables and non-availability of power in some places.
“There is no power supply in some sections of the expressway and we had to lay new cables. Also, the fibre optics cable is 15 years old, and it is taking a lot of time to fix the system,” he said.
AK Sharma, project director of NHAI, said they are pushing the concessionaire to complete the work as it is crucial to decongest the road. “We will get it done fast,” he said.
The control room at Sirhaul plaza has four large screens and can accommodate the feed from multiple cameras.
However, only seven cameras are operational now. These cameras monitor the highway at Rao Tula Ram Flyover, T1 entry, Raddison Hotel, IGI Toll plaza, Ambience Mall, Shanker Chowk, and Iffco Chowk.
