GGM civic body launches new app to tackle malaria, dengue

To deal with vector-borne diseases such as dengue and malaria more effectively, the Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has launched a new mobile phone application called ‘Free VBD’.

Health workers deployed in dengue and malaria surveillance activities can mark the spots where they find mosquito-breeding or the spots that are potential breeding sites.

The information would be promptly circulated among all other workers.

Officials said these ‘red spots’ will be monitored closely and anti-larval activities will be carried out.

“The app would also work as a database for the MCG as we would be able to identify the areas where more workers are needed and the high-risk zones in the city,” Dr Brahmdeep Sandhu, chief medical officer of MCG said, adding that once cases of dengue emerge in the coming months, active dengue cases will also be marked.

Officials said the app would be available for residents in a few months. Once available, residents of the city can upload photos and information about breeding sites.

So far, two cases of malaria have been confirmed in the district. Although no dengue cases have emerged so far, the MCG has sent more than 400 notices to houses and offices where breeding was spotted, said officials.
