At least 34 puppies were found abandoned in a vacant plot along Sohna Road on Monday. These were later rescued by local residents and an NGO, but it was too late by then since two of the puppies had already died.
The rest of the puppies were rushed to a shelter home by members of an NGO, The Rehab Centre - An initiative by Animal Care Society. Four of the stray puppies have been sent to a foster home while the rest of the 28 puppies are undergoing treatment at the NGO’s rehabilitation centre for animals located on Gurgaon-Faridabad Road.
According to the residents and the members of the NGO, it seemed like the puppies were relocated as their mother was not around. However, relocating animals is illegal in India under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. The Act prohibits the infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering on animals.
A member of the NGO, Bhavna Pandit, said: “These puppies are around 20-days-old and cannot commute on their own. They were found by Meenakshi Rajagopalan, one of our members, who lives in that area. She found them around 10 in the morning in this cold weather. They could have all died of the cold.”
After being informed about the abandoned puppies, the volunteers of the NGO - Swagnika, Savina, Usha, Rashmi and Amritika rushed to the spot and rounded up all the puppies to prevent them from getting hit by vehicles on the road next to the road. They were later taken to the rehabilitation centre.
According to the member of the NGO, all puppies will be put up for adoption after four months, when they are old enough.
