The Indian government's proposed Rs 72,000 crore ($9.9bn) Holistic Development of Great Nicobar Island at Andaman and Nicobar Islands project has been granted environmental clearance amid controversy over its impact on the region's unique biodiversity. The project, which involves building an international container transhipment terminal, an airport, a township and area development, and a gas and solar-based power plant, will require the diversion of 130.75 sq km of pristine tropical rainforests, including habitat for endangered species including the Leatherback Turtle at Galathea Bay.
