Brazil's Para state, which has the highest levels of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, will launch a mandatory program to track cattle in order to crack down on related deforestation. Cattle ranching in Brazil is linked to nearly 24% of global annual tropical deforestation and about 10% of total global greenhouse gas emissions. The program aims to track all 24 million cattle in Para by December 2026 and will offer incentives for ranchers to join the traceability system. The initiative is part of Para Governor Helder Barbalho's effort to bolster the state's green credentials ahead of hosting the COP30 climate change summit in 2025.
