UK researchers' call to save unidentified plants, fungi species
Millions of undiscovered plant and fungi species are at risk of extinction, according to a report from London's Kew Gardens. The researchers are calling for urgent action to protect these species and speed up conservation efforts. Currently, an estimated 350,000 plant species are known to science, but as many as 100,000 more are yet to be named. Three-quarters of these unnamed species are likely to be threatened with extinction. The report also states that 45% of flowering plants that have already been identified are at risk of extinction.
