Plastic levels in Lake Geneva as high as world's oceans
Lake Geneva, known as Lac Leman in French, has been found to have levels of plastic pollution as high as the oceans, according to research by Geneva-based non-profit Oceaneye. The crescent-shaped lake, which is the largest in western Europe, is fed partly by Alpine glaciers and spills into the Rhone River, which eventually flows into the Mediterranean Sea. The lake’s water is treated and piped into homes as drinking water. Pascal Hagmann, the founder and director of Oceaneye, expressed concern about rising plastic consumption, noting that projections for the future were “pessimistic if we do nothing”.
