Published on Mar 01, 2018 01:19 PM IST

A study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences observed that there would be an increase in extreme rainfall events, but an overall decline in monsoon by the end of the century.

The dip in rains, as per the study, is due to the combined effect of the decrease in low pressure activity in the Bay of Bengal by 60% and a 10% increase in northern states over land.(AFP File Photo)

Low-oxygen zones in oceans expanding, including off India’s coast

Open oceans have lost 2% of their oxygen in the second half of the 20th century. Oxygen-minimum zones in the open oceans have expanded by the size of the European Union (4.5 million sqkm).

Low oxygen areas, which are normally present throughout the N. Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal, are expanding over the last half century. This can affect fisheries, livelihoods and the biogeochemical cycles of the oceans, according to Lisa Levin, a co-author of the paper.(AP)

Air quality in Uttar Pradesh falls to hazardous levels

Several cities in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday faced dangerous levels of pollution after the spell of favourable meteorological conditions and a smattering of rain that led to an improvement in the air quality in Delhi ended. The change in meteorological conditions, especially the inflow of moisture carrying winds, impacted other cities in the Indo-Gangetic plain more than the national capital.

Despite facing similar meteorological conditions as Delhi, some cities in the region have worse air quality as they are heavily influenced by local factors.
