Parkachik Glacier is one of the largest glacier in the Suru River valley, which is a part of the Southern Zanskar Ranges, western Himalaya.

Melting of Ladakh glacier could form three glacial lakes: Study

Scientists from the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology have found that the Parkachik Glacier in Ladakh is melting at an accelerated rate, which could lead to the formation of three glacial lakes. These lakes could potentially cause glacial lake outburst floods in the Himalayas. The study attributes the accelerated glacial retreat to climate warming and surface morphological changes. The scientists identified three potential sites for lake formation on the glacier, with each lake having an area ranging from 43 to 270 hectares. The expansion and reduction of these lakes depend on the dynamics of the glacier.
