Interview | Madhav Gadgil: “Paddy farming is no reason for landslides in western ghats”
The recent landslide incident in Irshalwadi village in Raigad district has drawn attention to the need for the protection of the Western Ghats. Ecologist Madhav Gadgil, who headed the Western Ghats Ecology Expert Panel in 2010, has emphasized the importance of conserving the ghats, which are experiencing a significant increase in landslide incidents. Human intervention, including encroachments, mining activities, and infrastructure projects, is among the major contributing factors. Paddy farming, however, is not a significant cause of landslides, as historically there have been no such incidents associated with it. The state government has been waiting for a response from the Centre regarding the Gadgil committee's report, but the wait for protection of the Western Ghats may be prolonged, leading to further destruction.
