In pics | Flood, fire and quake: Three calamities that shocked the world

Hurricane Irma, Hurricane Harvey, wildfires and an earthquake -- these are the environmental calamities that struck the US and Mexico this week.

It’s been a week of environmental disasters.

People along the Atlantic coast anxiously watched the behemoth while Irma battered the northern Caribbean, killing at least 14 people and leaving thousands homeless after destroying buildings and uprooting trees.

Days before, Hurricane Harvey dumped some 50 inches of rain on the low-lying Gulf coastal region after coming ashore on August 25, killing about 50 people and causing what $180 billion in damages in Texas.

Meanwhile, acrid yellow smoke clogged the skies of major Western US cities as they witnessed one of the worst wildfire seasons in American history.

On Friday, a massive 8.1-magnitude earthquake hit off Mexico’s southern coast, toppling houses in Chiapas state, causing at least five deaths and setting off a tsunami warning.
