How does climate change affect farming and food security?
At COP28, over 130 country leaders called for global and national food systems to be rethought to address climate change, marking the first official recognition at a U.N. climate summit of growing concerns about food security and emissions from agriculture. Climate change is threatening food security by causing extreme weather events, crop diseases, and pests, making food less affordable and increasing global hunger. Farmers are adapting to climate extremes, but challenges such as heatwaves are harder to counter. Efforts to address these threats include supporting small-scale farmers, reducing food waste, and revamping humanitarian aid systems.
