‘From plate to planet’: Surprising impact of food waste on climate change

Marilene Capentes, a 47-year-old waste picker in Malabon, Philippines, collects and segregates garbage every morning except Sunday. The Mother Earth Foundation, a member of the Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives, is working to prevent food waste from going to landfills and emitting methane gas, a powerful greenhouse gas responsible for 30% of global warming. As more countries pledge to reduce methane emissions, waste pickers around the world are working with government officials to establish composting facilities and educate households on waste segregation. This is a proven and affordable climate solution, with the potential to make a huge difference in slowing the pace of climate change.
