Flooding in Punjab threatens endangered gharial, migratory birds in Harike wetlands
Heavy silt deposits caused by flooding in Punjab's Harike Wetland zone have raised concerns about the conservation of the gharial, an endangered Indian crocodile species. Silt deposits and flooding may also have an impact on the population of migratory birds that visit the wetland from November onwards. A section of the gharial population has reportedly been swept into adjacent Pakistani waters due to the flooding. Wildlife authorities and conservationists are worried about the loss of natural assets and habitat for several species, including mammals and fish.
