Coastal shellfish 'colonise' ocean plastic, reveals study
Coastal species of shellfish and anemones have been found breeding on floating islands of garbage in the Pacific, according to a study by US researchers. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch comprises plastic waste such as bottles and fishing nets. The study discovered 37 types of invertebrates, mostly originating from coastal areas, on items collected from between California and Hawaii. More than two-thirds of the items had coastal species on them, including crustaceans, sea anemones and bryozoans. Scientists have expressed concern that the influx of invasive coastal species could lead to significant ecological shifts in the marine environment.
