Climate change reason for ‘harsh’ drought in Syria, Iraq and Iran: Study

A three-year drought in Syria, Iraq, and Iran that has left millions of people without water is a result of human-caused climate change, according to a study by international climate scientists. The drought, which started in July 2020, is primarily due to hotter temperatures evaporating rainfall. Without a 1.2°C rise in global temperatures since the mid-19th century, the drought would not have occurred. The study found that climate change is intensifying naturally dry conditions and making life more difficult for people in the region.
