Cause and Effect | The undeniable and alarming increase in Earth's energy imbalance

The Earth is trapping nearly twice as much heat as it did in 2005, according to a study by NASA and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration. The phenomenon, known as Earth Energy Imbalance (EEI), is caused by greenhouse gas emissions. The Earth is storing most of the excess heat in the ocean, with 89% of it accumulating there. The excess heat can cause a range of problems such as melting glaciers, rising sea levels and more frequent droughts. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has predicted that energy will continue to accumulate in the Earth system until at least the end of the 21st century.
