El Nino is the warming of waters in the Pacific Ocean, which in India, leads to the monsoon being drier than usual.

Cause and Effect | El Nino may make a bad situation worse

Global temperatures are predicted to soar to record levels over the next five years, with an El Nino exacerbating the effects of climate change caused by greenhouse gas emissions, according to the World Meteorological Organisation. The UN agency?s Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update said there was a 66% chance of exceeding the 1.5°C threshold in at least one year between 2023 and 2027. El Nino occurs when unusual warming of surface water in the eastern equatorial Pacific pushes water back towards the Americas, with less cold water rising to the surface.
