Cause and Effect | Carbon, carbon everywhere
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a technology that aims to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it or reuse it. However, experts warn that the technology may not be the solution it seems to be. The cost of CCS varies and is not efficient at the current scale of projects. Direct air capture (DAC) is location-independent, but too expensive and too energy-intensive for the amount of carbon it removes from the atmosphere. Carbon credits, which companies invest in planting trees or future carbon dioxide removal capacity, may be a distraction from efforts to reduce emissions.
