Residents in Valais, a canton in southern Switzerland, claim that their snow-covered mountain sides are being encroached with an invasive species: cacti. And the credit goes to global warming. Opuntia species and similar cacti have also been identified in some of the hills around Sion, the capital of Valais. Environmentalists believe that a warmer climate in the Alps allows a longer vegetation period. In the Alps, snow is becoming rarer at lower altitudes.
