Are we at greater risk of avalanches?

A yellow warning was issued for East Sikkim and an orange warning for North Sikkim on 3 and 4 April due to the possibility of an avalanche. However, officials are unsure if the alert reached locals and tourists. India Meteorological Department has warned that thunderstorms and rainfall will continue until Thursday. An avalanche user’s guide released by Snow and Avalanche Establishment under Defence Research and Development Organisation shows that avalanche danger increases with the increasing slope angle.
