Priyal Mahajan opens up 25-year age gap with Amar Upadhyay, says romantic scenes were ‘difficult’ at first

Priyal Mahajan has been cast opposite Amar Upadhyay, who is 25 years her senior, in the Colors show Molkki. She said that doing romantic scenes with him was ‘difficult’ at first.

Priyal Mahajan opened up about the 25-year age gap with her onscreen husband Amar Upadhyay in the Colors show Molkki and how it was a ‘little difficult’ to do romantic scenes with him initially. On the show, she plays a teenager who is married off to a middle-aged widowed father of two children, as a part of the bride-buying custom.

Speaking to a leading daily, Priyal said that the age difference between her and Amar ‘never bothered’ her because most of the cast members and even her director are senior to her. “So this age factor has never crossed my mind and I hope it doesn’t come in future also. Amar sir is elder to me, but there has never been a moment that I had awkwardness talking to him. We mostly discuss scenes so there has been no discomfort. We have fun while shooting and crack small, healthy jokes,” she said.

While Priyal is 19, Amar is 44. She talked about doing romantic scenes with him and how it was tough at first. “Initially, we did not have romantic scenes. The storyline was very different but slowly the story progressed and we had to do romantic scenes. But there were not many romantic scenes, it was more to do with eyes and all and that was also very difficult for me. This is my first show as a lead and I was learning every day, I still am. Initially, it was a little difficult and I felt I couldn’t do it,” she said, crediting her co-star for putting her at ease. “Amar sir started talking normally, maybe he sensed that I was not comfortable enough. Then things came on track,” she added.

Molkki premiered in November last year. The show is set in Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, and touches upon the issue of brides for sale. Talking about playing Purvi, Priyal had earlier said in a statement that the character helps her ‘explore the harsh realities of the real world’. “The main reason why I have picked up this character is that it challenges my set of skills as an actor, as there are no similarities between our lives. I was born and brought up in Delhi hence the word Molkki was alien to me,” she said.

“Going through the whole research and hearing the unheard sounds of life, it's already been a beautiful experience in its own way. Yes, being an uptown girl playing a character that was born and brought up in rural areas requires a lot of research, study, and understanding of their way of their culture,” she had added.
