Definitely: Aoki set for cake throw in Bengaluru
Ahead of his performance in the city, DJ Steve Aoki shares what he loves about Indian fans and his cake-throwing ritual at gigs
American DJ Steve Aoki is set to enthral music aficionados in Bengaluru after almost a decade. The 45-year-old, best-known for his cake-throwing tactic on stage, is ecstatic to be back. Talking to us, Aoki shares, “It’s been almost seven years since I last visited India. The crowd here is absolutely electric. The raw energy that they exude is incomparable. The first time I performed here, I was blown by the response I got and I am happy to be back.”

But will Bengaluru also get to experience the cake throw? “Most definitely! This move actually started back in 2011 when I threw a cake at a fan in the crowd and the video went viral. Since then, it’s become a popular part of my shows and has gone on to become something my fans and I look forward to,” he says.
The HiROQUEST: Genesis musician says he’s waiting for an opportunity to work in the Indian music scene. “I’ve said this time and again that I would jump at the opportunity to work with Indian artistes. India is such a culturally rich country in terms of music and one cannot help but want to collaborate with local musicians,” he says.
Aoki was one of the first Asian people to be talked about globally. Amid the increasing popularity of south Asian and south east Asian music today, Aoki feels glad to see it all unfold. He adds, “It feels nice when I see Asian artistes thriving in the music scene. I’ve always tried to break the musical and cultural boundaries with my work and this is what I’ve tried to incorporate in my music label too. There used to be a time when Asian artistes and music weren’t represented as much, but I’m happy to see that change. Asian pop has gained such a large audience over the years. And BTS is now the biggest thing in the world.”
Ask him what his fans can expect from him next, and Aoki says, “There are so many amazing projects that I am working on right now. A few of them are set to come out in 2023. But, I want it all to be a surprise so you will just have to wait and see. After all, surprises make life fun! For now, however, I am really hoping to spend more time in India.”
