As the mystery surrounding his death grows, questions about his pet dog and its death are intensifying. The two-time Oscar winner was known for his love for animals.
While the authorities have not revealed any information about Hackman's deceased dog, the veteran actor's author bio, according to the Simon & Schuster website, states that he shared his Santa Fe home with Arakawa and two German shepherds.
In 1999, Hackman adopted a third dog while filming The Replacements in Baltimore alongside Keanu Reeves. At the time, two stray dogs walked onto the set as the two actors were filming.
The Behind Enemy Lines star initially took the strays to an animal shelter, where they were named Gene and Keanu after him and the Matrix star.
However, Hackman and his pianist wife later eventually decided to adopt the dog named Gene. Last year, Animal Rescue Inc, paid tribute to the Superman star on his birthday.
“Happy 94th birthday to our most famous adopter Gene Hackman !! While filming The Replacements in Baltimore in 1999, two stray dogs wandered onto the movie set. Both dogs were transported to us via limousine and the Hackmans came up the following week and adopted one of them,” the shelter's Facebook post read.
