And promptly, she was welcomed to the awards with a brutal roast from host Conan O'Brien, with references to her publicist and the tweets themselves. Karla Sofia Gascon missed several award shows in the run up to the Oscars after her old controversial tweets resurfaced. It was only days before the Academy Awards that news emerged that Karla would attend the awards, where she is nominated for Best Actress.
Host Conan O'Brien wasted no time in getting to Karla and the controversy, when he mentioned, “Little fact for you, Anora uses the F word 479 times. That's three more than the record set by Karla Sofia Gascon's publicist.” He then mimicked the actor's publicist talking on the phone and screamed, “She tweeted what?”
Addressing Sofia directly then, Conan said, “Sofia, if you want to tweet about the Oscars tonight, remember, my name is Jimmy Kimmel.”
The controversy
According to Deadline, sources close to Gascon confirmed two days ahead of the awards that Netflix will cover her expenses to attend the 97th Academy Awards. Her invitation to the Oscars had initially seemed uncertain due to recent controversies surrounding offensive social media posts from 2020 and 2021.
The tweets, which included insensitive remarks on various subjects such as Muslims, George Floyd, and the Black Lives Matter movement, led to widespread backlash, and Netflix distancing her from the film and themselves.
Karla Sofia Gascon made history as the first transwoman to be nominated for Best Actress at the Oscars earlier this year. She had earned praise for her performance in Emilia Perez, the musical from Jacques Audiard. The 97th Academy Awards are streaming live on JioHotstar in India.
