As promised, Hansal Mehta casts Shweta Basu in a documentary

National Award-winning film-maker, Hansal Mehta, has kept his promise of offering a role to actor Shweta Basu Prasad, who was arrested in September this year for her alleged involvement in a sex racket.

The director will cast the Makdee (2002) actor in a documentary. “We spoke over the phone. I called her and we met in my office as well. We spoke for a long time, and I have offered her a role in a documentary which will be based on Hindustani classical music,” says Mehta.

In September, several Bollywood directors including Mehta had pledged to support her after she was quoted as saying that she was pushed into prostitution because of lack of work.

However, following the support from the film fraternity, the 23-year-old actor had clarified that she had enough work, and didn’t want anyone to offer her roles out of pity.

“I don’t want roles for sympathy. If the role suits me, I will act in the film. I am re-inventing myself, and will be back to normal soon,” Prasad was quoted as saying in an earlier interview.

Interestingly, Mehta, too, told us that he did not offer her the role out of sympathy, but because she is an incredibly talented actor.

“Even I agree that no one should offer her a role out of sympathy. My intention was never that. We all know that she is talented and it was a no-brainer to cast her in the project,” he says.
