UP poll results: 49 candidates lose by less than 5000 votes, 25 of them from Samajwadi Party

Those who lost by less than 5,000 votes this time also included 18 candidates of the BJP, three of the RLD, two of the Nishad Party and one of the Apna Dal (Sonelal)

Forty-nine candidates, including 25 Samajwadi Party nominees, lost the 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly elections by less than 5000 votes each, according to Election Commission of India (ECI) data. The UP poll results were declared on March 10 with the BJP retaining power in the state.

In 2017, 47 Samajwadi Party candidates had lost by less than 5,000 votes.

The others who lost by less than 5,000 votes this time included 18 candidates of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), three of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), an SP ally, two of the Nishad Party and one of the Apna Dal (Sonelal). The Nishad Party and the Apna Dal (Sonelal) are BJP allies.

Among the UP poll results, Dhampur in Bijnor district saw the narrowest victory margin. Bharatiya Janata Party nominee Ashok Kumar Rana defeated SP’s Naeem-ul-Hasan by just 203 votes there.

Samajwadi Party candidates lost by less than 5,000 votes in Aliganj, Aurai, Bahraich, Chhibramau, Etawah, Faridpur, Jalalabad, Bindki, Jalesar, Katra, Madhuban, Manikpur, Madiyahun, Mohammadi, Moradabad Nagar, Nakud, Phulpur, Salon, Shahganj, Shravasti, Sitapur, Sultanpur and Tirwa assembly constituencies. The victory margin in six of these seats was less than 1,000 votes.

The RLD lost in Baraut by 315 votes, Nehtaur by 258 votes and Bijnor by 1,445 votes

BJP’s Kamlesh Saini lost to the SP’s Swami Omvesh by just 234 votes in Chandpur. The BJP lost the Ramnagar seat by 261 votes and the Isauli seat by 269 votes.

The margin of defeat for the BJP candidates was less than 5,000 votes in Basti Sadar, Bhadohi, Bisauli, Dibiyapur, Dumariaganj, Ghazipur, Etawah, Jasrana, Kithor, Meja, Patiali, Pharenda, Raniganj, Sareni and Zaidpur. It was less than 1,000 votes in six of these seats.

The Nishad Party lost the Handia and Kalpi seats to the SP by 3,543 and 2,816 votes respectively. The SP defeated the Apna Dal (S) nominee in Bachhrawan by 2,812 votes.

The BJP candidates registered the five biggest victory margins. Sunil Kumar Sharma topped the list. He won the Sahibabad seat by a margin of 2.14 lakh votes. Pankaj Singh’s victory margin in Noida was 1.81 lakh. Amit Agarwal polled 1.18 lakh votes more than his nearest rival in Meerut Cantonment.

Purushottam Khandelwal and Shrikant Sharma of the BJP won by 1.12 lakh and 1.09 lakh votes in Agra North and Mathura respectively.

The BJP bagged 255 of the 403 seats in the UP assembly. Its allies Apna Dal (S) got 12 and the Nishad Party six.

The SP won 111 seats and its allies the RLD got eight and the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) won six seats.

The Congress and the Jansatta Dal Loktantrik got two seats each. The Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) got one seat.

The Uttar Pradesh assembly election was held in seven phases between February 10 and March 7.
