Ranganath got a total of 58,697 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party's D Krishna Kumar secured 53,097 votes. Janata Dal (Secular)'s candidate D. Nagarajaiah grabbed the third spot with 44,476 votes. The top three parties got 36.4%, 33.0% and 27.6% respectively.
In Karnataka Assembly election 2013, Janata Dal (Secular)'s D. Nagarajaiah beat Bharatiya Janata Party's D.Krishnakumar by 9,632 votes.
