It was an extremely close fight, with Indian National Congress's Channabasappa Sathyappa Shivalli narrowly winning the election upstaging Bharatiya Janata Party's Chikkanagoudra Siddanagoud Ishwaragod by a slim margin of 634 votes.
The top two candidates split 88.1% of votes between them. Indian National Congress's Channabasappa Sathyappa Shivalli got a total of 64,871 votes, while Bharatiya Janata Party's Chikkanagoudra Siddanagoud Ishwaragod secured 64,237 votes. Janata Dal (United)'s candidate Hajaratali A Shekh Jodamani secured 7,318 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties got 44.3%, 43.9% and 5.0% respectively.
In Karnataka Assembly election 2013, Indian National Congress's Channabasappa Satyappa Shivalli defeated Karnataka Jantha Paksha's Chikkangoudra Siddangouda Ishwargoud by 21,072 votes.
