Patel was sworn in as Gujarat chief minister in September last year, replacing Vijay Rupani in the top post after the ruling party overhauled senior state leadership in a bid to counter anti-incumbency ahead of the 2022 election. A member of the Patidar community, Patel is widely seen as a 'clean' politician and will defend the seat in Ahmedabad district he won in 2017.
