Sonai is one of the 126 Assam Legislative Assembly Constituencies that comes under the Cachar district. Assam Assembly Election 2021 for Sonai was held on April 1 and the result was declared on May 2.
In Assam Assembly Election 2016, there were 1,58,077 registered voters for Sonai assembly seat, out of which 82,218 were male and 75,859 were female voters. 0.8% of voters opted for for the None of the Above (NOTA) option.
In 2016, 12 candidates were contesting for Sonai assembly constituency seat. Sonai was one of 60 seats won by the Indian National Congress. Bharatiya Janta Party's Aminul Haque Laskar won the election by defeating Indian National Congress's Anamul Haque by a margin of 7,553 votes.
The top three candidates split 92.5% of votes between them. Bharatiya Janta Party's Aminul Haque Laskar got a total of 44,236 votes, while Indian National Congress's Anamul Haque secured 36,683 votes. All India United Democratic Front's candidate Karim Uddin Barbhuiya grabbed the third spot with 32,109 votes. The top three parties got 36.2%, 30.0% and 26.3% respectively.
In Assam Assembly election 2011, Indian National Congress's Anamul Haque outperformed Bharatiya Janta Party's Audesh Kumar Singh by 42,028 votes.
