Jonai comes under the Dhemaji district and it is one of the 126 Assam Legislative Assembly Constituencies . People of Jonai voted for Assam Assembly Election 2021 on March 27 and the result was declared on May 2.
Jonai assembly constituency had 2,51,792 electors in 2016, out of which 1,30,163 were male voters and 1,21,629 females. The None of the Above (NOTA) option got 0.7% votes.

It was a one way contest with independent candidate Bhubon Pegu comfortably winning the election upstaging Bharatiya Janta Party's Aswini Pait by a huge margin of 49,293 votes.
78.7% of the total votes were casted to top three candidates. Independent candidate Bhubon Pegu grabbed a total of 88,441 votes, while Bharatiya Janta Party's Aswini Pait got 39,148 votes. Indian National Congress's candidate Satho Basumatary bagged 33,265 votes to finish at the third place. The top three parties registered 43.3%, 19.2% and 16.3% respectively.
In Assam Assembly election 2011, Indian National Congress's Pradan Baruah defeated independent candidate Bhuban Pegu by 19,510 votes.
