Prima facie, one body appears to be of a seer, who might have taken ‘jal-samadhi’, they said.
Personnel of ‘jal police’, a specialised force of the Uttarakhand Police, recovered the bodies from Pull Jatwada regulator, 8 km from Haridwar city, after locals spotted the bodies.
“Prima facie the bodies seem to be a few weeks old and we have sent them to district hospital for post-mortem. Only after getting the report, we can arrive at some conclusion of exact cause of the death,” Jwalapur police station SHO Amarjeet Singh said.
“A team is monitoring the regulator area and nearby area to check about any other bodies in the canal,” he said.
Superintendent of City Police Mamta Vohra told HT: “After the post mortem report, we will keep them for 72 hours for identity purpose. As all the bodies are in mutilated condition, it’s quite tough to say anything about exact cause of their death.
On Tuesday, a body of a teenager was recovered from nearby Ranipur Jhal.
Spotting of bodies at Jwalapur canal regulator was reported on numerous occasions. As per district police records, 98 bodies of unidentified people were found in Haridwar last year.
Sparsh Ganga activist Shikhar Paliwal told HT that in the past few months, they had taken out six bodies from the same area.
