MI vs KKR Highlights, IPL 2023: Venkatesh Iyer's ton in vain as Mumbai Indians beat Kolkata Knight Riders by 5 wickets

Ishan Kishan hits Suyash Sharma for a FOUR and with that he also brings up his half-century. Takes 21 balls to reach the milestone and welcomes Varun Chakravarthy with a six in the next over. 

However, the spinner cleans up the batter in the same over as he falls for 58(25). MI: 90/2 (8 overs)

Suryakumar Yadav hits Varun Chakravarthy for a FOUR. He bowls it short outside off, and SKY uses the depth of the crease to cut it towards point as the ball races towards the fence. KKR: 72/1 (6 overs)

Suyash Sharma the Impact Substitute delivers as Rohit Sharma is brilliantly caught by Umesh Yadav at mid-off. He moves to his left, and dives to grab it as Rohit falls for 20(13). MI: 65/1 (5 overs)

Sunil Narine comes into the attack and he is welcomed with a four by Rohit Sharma. Bowls it slightly full and Rohit has no difficulty in sending it to the fence square of the wicket. 

Ishan Kishan continues his carnage and whacks Narine for a maximum. Steps down and hits it over the long-on fence. He does the same in the fifth ball and finishes the over with a boundary. 22 runs come off the over as MI race to 57/0 in 4 overs.

Umesh Yadav continues from his end and he starts with a dot before being hit for a six by Rohit Sharma. Bowls it full, offers width and Rohit smashes it over cover for a six. 

Ishan also hits the pacer for a four. Picks a good length ball and whacks it towards mid-wicket for a boundary. He then finishes the over with a maximum, sending the ball over the long-on fence. MI: 35/0 (3 overs)

Shardul Thakur comes into attack and Ishan Kishan hits the seamer for consecutive fours. The first one is pitched full, which is driven towards covers for a boundary. Thakur then changes his length and bowls it shot, which is punched for a boundary towards thirdman.

The carnage continues as this time Thakur offers width and it is slashed over the fence almost square of the wicket for a maximum. MI: 18/0 (2 overs)

Yadav starts with a full delivery, which is knocked straight ttowards the bowler by Rohit. Fortunate for him as the ball bounces right in front of the bowler, who attempts for a caught and ball on his followthrough. Two runs come off the first five balls. 

Mumbai Indians introduce Impact Substitute as Rohit Sharma comes in for Riley Meredith.

Kolkata Knight Riders also does the same. Gets in Suyash Sharma for Venkatesh Iyer.

Meanwhile, the pair of Ishan Kishan and Rohit Sharma also start the 186 chase. Umesh Yadav leads the attack for KKR.

A brilliant final over by Riley Meredith despite Russell hitting two boundaries in it. 10 runs come off it as KKR pile a challenging 185/6 in 20 overs.

Russell returns unbeaten on 21(11).

Duan Jansen comes to bowl the penultimate over and starts with a dot against Andre Russell. The KKR all-rounder, however, connects him for a six and a four in the next two deliveries before passing the strike to Rinku Singh.

The pacer then removes Rinku Singh for 18(18). He is caught by Nehal Wadhera at long-on. KKR: 175/6 (19 overs)

Riley Meredith strikes as Venkatesh Iyer reverse scoops it straight to Duan Jansen at short third man. The batter falls for 104(51). 

Andre Russell walks out to bat. KKR: 160/5 (18 overs)

Venkatesh Iyer completes a single after hitting a short ball by Duan Jansen towards offside to bring up his century. He takes 49 deliveries to complete the milestone as KKR reach 155/4 in 17 overs.

Rinku Singh steps down and converts a wide of off stump ball by Piyush Chawla into a full toss and hits it for a four towards covers. 

Six runs come off his over as he too completes his quota. Economical stuff as he concedes 19 runs and picks a wicket. KKR: 146/4 (16 overs)

Hrithik Shokeen bowls a tight over as just five runs come off it. That will also be the end of his quota as the bowler concedes 34 and scalps two wickets. KKR: 140/4 (15 overs)

Venkatesh Iyer hits Riley Meredith for a SIX as he bowls a short ball, which is pulled by Iyer over deep mid-wicket. 

11 runs come off the over as Iyer moves into his 90s. KKR: 135/4 (14 overs)

Hrithik Shokeen breaks the 50-run stand between Venkatesh Iyer and Shardul Thakur as the latter goes for the aerial route but finds Tilak Varma at deep, who takes a good catch. Thakur falls for 13(11) as Rinku Singh joins in. KKR: KKR 124-4 (13 overs)

Duan Jansen is reintroduced into the attack and Venkatesh Iyer hits the pacer for a six as he misses his length and bowls it slightly short on the pads, which is easily pulled by the batter over the backward square leg fence. 

He then hits the pacer for another boundary as he shuffles and guides the ball fine of the fine leg fielder, which ends up at the ropes. KKR 117-3 (12 overs)

Venkatesh Iyer connects Riley Meredith for consecutive sixes as 14 runs come off his first over. KKR move to 104/3 in 11 overs.

Shardul Thakur steps down against Hrithik Shokeen in the first ball and fails to get a connection as he tries to defend the ball pitched outside off. However, Ishan Kishan makes a mess as he fails to catch the ball, allowing Thakur with enough time to return to the crease.

Venkatesh Iyer once again gets an inside edge, which beats the wicketkeeper and short fine leg fielder for a boundary. Second time this has happened in Shokeen's over as Iyer reaches his 50 in 23 balls. 

Iyer then finishes the over with a six. Goes down on his knee and sweeps it over square leg fence. 

Piyush Chawla comes to bowl the next over and concedes just six runs in it as KKR reach 90/3 at the halfway stage.

Hrithik Shokeen strikes as Nitish Rana hits it straight to the fielder Ramandeep Singh (substitute) at long-on. He falls for 5(10), following which both exchange words, forcing the umpire to intervene. KKR: 73/3 (8.1 overs)

Hrithik Shokeen comes into the attack and he starts with an inside edge against Venkatesh Iyer, which beats the keeper and short fine leg fielder and races for a four.

Iyer then hits the spinner for another four, this time much more convincing as he goes down on his knee and sweeps it towards backward square leg boundary.

Piyush Chawla continues from the other end and concedes five runs in his over. KKR: 73-2 (8 overs)

Piyush Chawla comes into the attack and bowls it full, with some flight against Rahmanullah Gurbaz, who tries to play it over point. However, he fails to get the desired connection as the ball lofts in the air, slightly wide of Hrithik Shokeen. The fielder gives his 100 percent but only manages to get his hands on it as the batter takes a single. 

However, he is dismissed later in the over, almost in the same region as Duan Jansen takes a simple catch at short third man. He departs for 8(12). 

Nitish Rana is the new batter in as KKR reach 57/2 after the end of powerplay.

Duan Jansen comes into the attack and Venkatesh Iyer charges dow against the pacer and smokes the length ball over long-on for a huge six.

Tries to do the same later in the over but mistimes it, which only results in a double. However, finishes the over with another maximum. Length ball and Iyer steps down and sends it over long-off for a six. KKR: 55/1 (5 overs)

Cameron Green continues from his end and he starts with a short ball against Rahmanullah Gurbaz. The batter pulls it, gets enough connection as the ball bounces close to the fielder at square leg, while the batter completes a single.

Venkatesh Iyer then gets a thick edge as he tries to play an upper cut in the next ball, which sends the ball over the slip fielders for a six. Iyer tries to do something fancy as he shuffles across the crease and tries to scoop the third ball, however, makes no connection. The batter immediately goes down the ground, looks in immense pain as the physio rush to the scene.

Iyer continues to bat despite the pain and hets a boundary in the very next ball. Not very convincing as it comes off an inside edge but the batter won't mind that as he faces problems while rotating the strike. KKR: 39/1 (4 overs) 

A back of a length ball by Arjun Tendulkar and Venkatesh Iyer punches it in the gap on the offside for a four. The bowler then charges down the ground and smashes a six against the pacer as the ball flies over the long-off fence. KKR: 25/1 (3 overs)

Cameron Green comes to bowl the second over and strikes in the fifth ball. Jagadeesan tries to find the gap square off the wicket but ends up playing right in front of Hrithik Shokeen, who bends forward to grab a sharp low catch. The batter departs for 0(5). 

Venkatesh Iyer walks in to bat. KKR: 12/1 (2 overs)

Arjun Tendulkar starts with a length ball wide of off-stump, changes his length the very next ball and bowls a low fulltoss. Gurbaz tries to play it over the covers but ends up misdirecting it as the ball flies in the air. Fortunate for the batter as it lands beyond Tim David's reach, who chased after the ball towards mid-off.

There is also a huge LBW appeal against Jagadeesan but MI players don't opt for a review. A hint of swing and hit the batter on his pads, but it looked like the ball was going over the middle and leg stumps.

Five runs come off the first over.

Suryakumar Yadav walks in place of Rohit Sharma for the toss as Mumbai Indians win toss and opt to bowl.

KKR might be tempted to bring in Tim Southee in place of Lockie Ferguson. 

The latter has not been very impressive and KKR, who would want some early blows, can pass the baton to his countrymen, who is available for selection.

While Surykumar Yadav is going through a lean patch but he has a staggering record against his former franchise. SKY has scored 337 runs with three half centuries in the nine matches against his former franchise.

Both Sunil Narine and Varun Chakravarthy have handled the spin department efficiently and are among the leading wicket-takers. The duo have scalped six wickets each and standing right behind them is Delhi boy Suyash Sharma, who has four scalps under his name.

Kolkata have some concerns as well and the biggest out of them is Andre Russell's fitness and form. The T20 specialist has struggled with the bat and is often not used by the Knight Riders as a bowling option. 

In the match against SRH, Russell did bowl and struck in his first delivery but failed to complete his full quoa. He was forced to leave the field due to cramps but he did scalp three wickets in the 2.1 overs he bowled. However, he did came back to bat but only lasted for six balls, in which he scored three.

With Russell hardly bowling and now his fitness being a concern, can KKR bring in Jason Roy in place of the big man, and let Rahmanullah Gurbaz open the innings with him.

Apart from Rinku, KKR skipper Nitish Rana, Venkatesh Iyer, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Shardul Thakur have also been among the runs.

Rana heads into the contest after smashing 75 off 41 balls against SRH and will hope to lead the side from the front one more time. 

Rinku Singh is the man of the moment and going by his form he'll be the biggest threat to Mumbai Indians. After pulling the heist against Gujarat Titans, when he smoked five sixes in the final five ball to ge his team home, Rinku scored another unbeaten 58 against Sunrisers Hyderabad, however, that came in a losing cause.

Kolkata are heading into the contest after breaching 200-plus total in their previous three matches.

Despite early stutter, KKR piled a massive 204/7 against RCB, chased down 205 against Gujarat Titans and scored 205/7 in response to SRH's 228/4 in the previous encounter.

MI will bank on their explosive all-rounders Tim David and Cameron Green to fire big. 

Tilak Varma has been the most standout batter from the MI camp so far and Ishan Kishan, who scored 31 off 26 in the previous encounter, will also look for an improved outing. Batting at a poor strike-rate of 121.66, MI wicketkeeper-batter has managed just 73 runs from three outings.
