KKR vs MI IPL 2022 Highlights: Cummins's record half century helps KKR win by five wickets

It may only be the 12th over but Andre Russell is not hanging around. He takes an almighty heave at his first ball and it is hit straight back to the bowler. He connects the next one and that goes sailing over the bowler's head into the stands. 

A nothing delivery from Ashwin and Rana's eyes lit up. He decides to send this out of the park but doesn't quite middle it. The ball ends up going straight down the throat of deep midwicket. 

Rana sends Mills over third man. Short delivery over 140kph from Mills and Rana makes room before just helping the ball on its way. 

Intriguing contest so far and Mumbai have their noses in front. KKR, however, are still one good partnership away from getting in the driver's seat here. There have Venkatesh Iyer and Nitish Rana in the middle so that's two batters capable of building a partnership from scratch. 

Billings steps down the pitch against Ashwin and hits it straight down the throat of long-off. Rohit gives Ashwin an enthusiastic hug, this has been such an improved bowling performance from MI thus far and the captain has managed to get a wicket from his spinner as well.

Venkatesh sends Murugan Ashwin soaring over deep square leg off the third ball of the ninth over. That is the first six of the tournament for Venkatesh. 

It's Billings again and this time the pull shot produces a six and not a wicket. Short from Thampi and Billings thumps it over square leg's head. Billings has raced to 15 off 9. 

A much needed big one from Billings. He picks it up and sends it over long-on. A single off the next ball brings up the 50 for KKR. 

Captain Shreyas Iyer falls to Sams and MI have managed to stay in front in the powerplay. It is the short ball that reaps dividends again for MI. It comes rushing in at Shreyas and he mistimes the pull. Square leg takes the catch.

The pressure pays off and Rahane falls. Mills strikes with his first ball of the match. Short delivery, Rahane pulls and it soars high up in the sky. Sams settles under it at deep midwicket and takes the catch.

Bumrah keeps the two batters pinned to the crease. Venkatesh managed to get off strike with a run after which Rahane manages to squeeze it to third man for another single. Just two runs off that over, KKR 16/0 in 4 overs. 

Venkatesh with the first boundary of the innings. A dab through fine leg off Thampi in the third over does it. KKR 14/0 after 3 overs. 

Ajinkya Rahane and Venkatesh Iyer open for KKR and Basil Thampi has the new ball in his hands. Not too much activity in that first over, except for a shot from Rahane that went just over gully. Quiet first over, safe to say. 

KKR were on top for much of the at innings but Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma switched gears and milked the death overs. After Suryakumar fell, Pollard threw his bat and was rewarded for it, smacking 22 runs in just five balls. That has given MI a total that one would call is more than competitive considering the conditions on offer. 

23 runs off the final over. That is the most Pat Cummins has ever conceded in an over in the IPL. Kieron Pollard lays into him after Suryakumar goes and luck goes with the Trinidadian. He smacks a six off the the third ball after running two off the first he faced. The next delivery goes wide and Pollard takes two more. Then came two streaky sixes over short third man to end the over. 

Suryakumar nicks behind, umpire had shaken his head and it was a bit of a half-hearted appeal but Shreyas goes upstairs. As it turns out, there was a small spike. 

Oh what a shot that is! Good length from Russell and SKY waits for it and slashes it over short third man. 

The big Jamaican is going to bowl the 19th over. Narine went for 14 runs in the 18th and so this is turning out to be quite an extraordinary finish. 

Suryakumar sends Narine miles high over square leg and moves intom the 40s. Who would say he has been out of competitive cricket for the past few months. What a finish this is turning out to be for MI. They are 123/3 in 17.3 overs

Tilak hits a four after the six to bring up the 50-run partnership with Suryakumar. Three singles followed after which Suryakumar sweeps over fine leg for a four.

It's Tilak Varma again for MI, what a find he is turning out to be. The first ball of the 17th over from Chakravarthy and he crunches it over deep midwicket. That takes MI past the 100-run mar. 104/1 off 16.1 overs. 

Cheeky from Tilak Varma and that is much needed for MI. It takes them to 91/3 in 15.1 overs so it is high time MI tried and got a move on. Varma scoops Cummins over fine leg, falls over while doing so but the ball sails safely over the boundary. 

Frustration for Umesh Yadav. He could have got his second wicket of the match in this over and instead, he has gone for 13 runs. Suryakumar hits the fifth ball for four towards deep midwicket and then deposits the next one over third man for six. 

MI 71/3 after 13 overs

That has ended up being an utter mess. Varma miscues a pull off Umesh and the ball goes straight up in the air. Rahane comes running in, no calling him and the wicketkeeper who surely had an easy catch there. The ball pops out of his hands to complete an ugly passage of play. 

Cummins gets the big wicket of Ishan Kishan and MI are in a bit of a pickle now. Just one run throghout the 11th over and the pressure pays off. Short delivery and Kishan miscues the pull, hits it straight into the stomach of Shreyas Iyer.

Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan, who were the two highest run scorers for MI when they won the title in 2020, are in the middle together for the first time this season. The run rate has dipped a bit since Brevis left but if these two manage to stick around till the end, MI know they will get a big total on the board. 

That is the end of Brevis's entertaining introduction to the IPL. That six was followed by four dots and Brevis seemed to be going for the same shot that got him the maximum off the fifth. But he misses it completely and Billings is quick to whip off the bails. Brevis didn't look too worried but replays showed that his backfoot didn't make it back accross the line in time.

Oh how about that. Chakravarthy's first ball of the match is angle on to the pads, Brevis rolls over those wrists, goes down on one knee and smacks it with the turn. Chooses not to even look  at the ball in the immediate aftermath of the shot. 

Narine bowls the first over after powerplay and the two batters choose to not get too adventurous. Four runs have come in that over and MI are 39/1 after 7. 

Brevis hits the first six of the innings and it's a streaky one. Short from Cummins and Brevis goes for the pull. It takes the top edge and, unlike what happened to Rohit, flies over the boundary behind him. 

MI 35/1 after 6 overs. 

This is not going to get any easier for MI. Umesh and Rasikh haven't really allowed them to get going and now, when one of them have been taken off, an all-time great takes his place. Cummins will bowl the last over the of the powerplay. 

Brewis is looking good so far. He rocks back and wallops it over long on for his second boundary of the innings. He then hits the next ball dead straight and it smashes onto the stumps at the non-striker's end. 

MI 23/1 after 5 overs. 

Dewald Brewis sends the second ball he faces in his IPL career through wide long-on for MI's first boundary of the match. Nice way to say hello to this tournament. 

The pressure gets to Rohit and Umesh has his man. Rohit tries to force a boundary, goes for a pull off the short delivery. The ball takes his top edge and it flies miles up behind him. Wicketkeeper Sam Billings runs backwards and seemed to be on a collision course with another fielder but it seems the communication worked as the latter pulled out.

And gives away just three runs. Good pressure built by KKR early in this match. Just three singles in that over and MI are 4/0 after 2. 

Bang on the money from Umesh first up with Rohit getting a couple of inside edges and nearly playing on once. He got off the mark with a single off the third ball after which Ishan Kishan saw off the rest of the over.

Shreyas Iyer: We are comfortable chasing with a set target in mind. All the teams are equally good and we always have to take that winning mindset and try and back your abilities. Southee was very supportive and we had a good conversation about the team changes.

Rohit Sharma: We were looking to bat first. We are not looking at what happened in the last 2 games, we have to play good cricket to win games and that is what we are prepared for. Looks like a good pitch. We have done well in patches and when you want to win games you gotta perform collectively and I think that is something that was missing in the last 2 games.

Fresh off captaining Australia to a Test series win in Pakistan and in the Ashes before that, Cummins says that he is nice and fresh now having been rested from the limited overs part of the Pakistan tour. “Feeling good. It's been ten days since we finished our last Test match. I am happy to play my role. Hopefully, I can add something whatever phase it is,” he told the host broadcaster.
