IPL auction 2020 highlights: Australians laugh their way to bank, uncapped Indian stars rake in big bucks

IPL Auction 2020 highlights: Australian paceman Pat Cummins on Thursday entered the record books after Kolkata Knight Riders decided to shell out a whopping 15.5 crore for him. Another Aussie went for big money as Glenn Maxwell was picked up for 10.75 crore by Kings XI Punjab, a franchise Maxwell has represented earlier. South African fast bowling all-rounder Chris Morris was bought for 10 crore by Royal Challengers Bangalore. He had a base price of 1.5 crore. West Indian left-handed paceman Sheldon Cottrell, who has impressed in the ongoing tour of India was bought for a whopping 8.5 crore by Kings XI Punjab. Mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy attracted big bucks yet again, finally going for 4 crore to Kolkata Knight Riders. Among the young uncapped players, left-handed Virat Singh and current U-19 captain Priyam Gard were both picked up by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 1.9 crore respectively. Mumbai lad Yashasvi Jaiswal was bought for 2.4 crore by Rajasthan Royals.Follow IPL 2020 auction highlights here:

Lalit Yadav is sold to Delhi Capitals for 20 lakh. Wicket-keeper batsman Nikhil Naik is sold to KKR for 20 lakh. England all-rounder Tom Curran goes to RR for 1 Cr. Isuru Udana sold to RCB for 50 lakh. Vinay Kumar wa sthe last player and he went unsold. With that, the IPL 2020 auction concludes and all the teams will be happy with what they have bought. Australians led the way as raked in big bucks and Englishmen were also in high demand. Uncapped Indian players also left their mark and went for big bucks.

10 players to go under the hammer and the first name to come out of the hat is Dale Steyn. The South African finally has a buyer and he goes back to RCB for his base price of 2 cr. Andrew Tye goes to RR for 1 Cr which was his base price.

Bidding war for another Australian

Rajasthan Royals and Delhi Capitals engaged in a bidding war for Marcus Stoinis and in the end DC prevailed. The landed the Aussie all-rounder for 4.8 cr. But Mark Wood is unsold once again.

Last year’s multi-millionaire Prabhsimran Singh had a base price of 20 lakh but a bidding war between KXIP and DC fetch him 55 lakh and he will play for Anil Kumble’s team. DC buy Tushar Deshpande for 20 lakh.

After being released by CSK, Mohit Sharma finds a buyer in DC for 50 lakh. However, Dale Steyn and Andrew Tye go unsold for second time today in this accelerated auction. Pavan Deshpande goes to RCB for 20 lakh.

All-rounder Anirudha Joshi is sold to Rajasthan Royals for 20 lakh. Digvijay Deshmukh and Prince Balwant Rai Singh go to Mumbai Indians for 20 lakh each. Sanjay Yadav to Sunrisers Hyderabad for 20 lakh.

Unsold list grows bigger and bigger

James Pattinson, Liam Plunkett, Kesrick Williams and George Garton all go unsold. Like Kevin Pietersen had said before the auction that apart from a good celebration, Williams doesn’t bring anything else to the table. The IPL franchises also think the same apparently.

Tambe goes to KKR

The oldest player in IPL, Praveen Tambe, comes to Kolkata. Tambe took a hattrick against KKR in 2014. Before the auction, he told HT: “I didn’t think about it…that I am 48…until you reminded me. That’s my approach. I am just as excited about the auctions as every other cricketer on the list.”

Australia medium pacer Kane Richardson goes for 4 cr and he is bought by RCB. West Indies pacer Oshane Thomas goes to RR for his base price of 50 lakh. All-rounder Sumit Kumar and Wicket-keeper Aryan Juyal are unsold.

Sri Lanka all-rounder Isuru Udana, Australia fast bowler Sean Abbot and New Zealand fast bowler Matt Henry fail to find any buyer in the auction.

Englishman Chris Jordan too rakes in big bucks as he goes for 3 cr to Kings XI Punjab. However, his compatriot failed to find any buyer as Tom Curran goes unsold.

Tom Banton goes to KKR

KKR snap up Tom Banton for his base price of 1 cr. The young wicket-keeper batsman was one of stars of the T20 Blast in England and even got a call-up to the national side. His stay at the crease against New Zealand was not entirely long, but he attracted a lot of interest from pundits.

The franchises were circumspect in the initial stages, but were rather expressive when the names of these uncapped prodigies propped up. We will have to decide on how he fits in because we have a lot of spinners but our wicket has always favoured spinners. Getting Hazelwood helped get us some firepower because we struggled with that last time: Stephen Fleming, CSK coach.
