Virat Kohli - Man of the Match and Winning captain

“Good outing with the bat. If you saw later half of the West Indies innings, it was difficult to bat on. Shikhar and Rohit didn’t get a big one. The team wanted me to step up and it was my opportunity to do it. It was important to string in a lot of dot balls. The batting became a little easy thanks to the rain. It was tough gripping the ball when the ball went into the outfield. The number of left handers work in favour of Kuldeep. Kedar was precise as well. With the number of left-handers, you want to go with a chinaman bowler rather than a leggie. Really got the tempo going and took the pressure of me.”
03:57 hrs IST
Losing captain - Carlos Brathwaite
“Extremely disappointing. We bowled really well and the game in our hands. We lost crucial wickets at the back end to lose the game. We need to take responsibility. We need to take the game deep. The pitch was pretty good but the bowlers despite the humid conditions did well. The batters have to take the responsibilty. They have been letting us down far too often.”
03:46 hrs IST
Shreyas Iyer speaks
“It was a fruitful day. I knew I was going to do well, I played for India A and I played in these grounds, paced my innings well and think it went well. I decided that I wouldn’t take any risks, Virat told me that we needed to build a partnership and take the innings deep. He supported me very well, we took the ones and twos, hit the boundaries when it came. We decided 250 was a good score, obviously we got 30 runs extra. He told me to bat at least until the 45th over, I am thankful for what I managed. I want to stay in the team for a while, the consistency is always important, I want to play well and contribute to the team.”

Virat Kohli is currently the second-highest run-scorer against Windies in ODIs and if he manages to score 19 runs in the upcoming match, he will take the first spot in this illustrious list. Currently, legendary Pakistan cricketer Javed Miandad tops the list.
Chris Gayle is on the verge of surpassing legendary Brian Lara to become the highest run-getter for West Indies in the 50-overs format. Lara, in his career, scored 10,48 runs in 295 ODIs. Gayle is just 7 runs away from smashing the record. He was dismissed for 4 in the rain-spoilt first ODI. The left-handed batsman has 10,342 runs at the moment in the ODIs in 295 matches.

Top player battles
Chris Gayle vs Kuldeep Yadav: Chris Gayle has been struggling to find form of later. But India bowlers will not make the mistake of not considering the threat he poses. The batsman was dismissed for 4 in the first ODI with Kuldeep Yadav cleaning him up. The dismissal could be playing on Gayle’s mind when he takes the field in Trinidad. Kuldeep will also feel the confidence of bowling against the hard-hitter, after already dismissing him in the series. The skipper Virat Kohli could once again introduce the chinaman early on in the match and the simmering rivalry could be on display.
Virat Kohli vs Sheldon Cottrell: The Indian skipper Virat Kohli struggled to find his rhythm when he faced West Indies seamer Sheldon Cottrell in the shortest format. The right-armer dismissed the captain in all the three T20Is. This is one battle that Kohli would be wanting to come out on top of, as he is someone who enjoys challenges. Cottrell, on the other hand will hope he can get him out once again in the ODIs and continue the mind games with the batsman.

Debut expected for India
In case Bhuvneshwar Kumar wants some rest, Navdeep Saini could come in while a bit more turn on offer would mean Yuzvendra Chahal back in the mix as an additional spinner. Pacer Khaleel Ahmed will then be dropped from the playing XI. Khaleel went for 27 in three overs and was guilty of bowling short to opener Evin Lewis, who was on 40 when heavens opened up. However both these possibilities look remote as of now since last match got abandoned.

Jadhav to continue his run?
The series is also important for Kedar Jadhav, who is next in line to get a permanent boot from the national side after Dinesh Karthik. With Shubman Gill waiting in the wings, time is running out for the pint-sized Maharashtra cricketer, whose batting slot has been a worry for skipper Kohli and coach Shastri. There is a school of thought in the Indian cricket fraternity that Jadhav doesn’t have the requisite technique to bat up the order and neither enough power to clear the ropes consistently at the death.

The curious case of KL Rahul
Iyer being given a go at number four certainly means that KL Rahul will have to cool his heels till Shikhar Dhawan is persisted at the top of the order. The team combination for the first game is an indicator that after a good World Cup at the top of the order post Dhawan’s injury, Rahul is being looked at as a specialist opener who will only come in place of Dhawan or Rohit in case of an injury to any one of the two.
17:00 hrs IST
India’s middle order conundrum
Shreyas Iyer has had a good series with the A team in this part of the world, having hit two half centuries against the West Indies A. He has now got a measure of the tracks. Virat Kohli’s guidance and a friendly arm around shoulders from vice-captain Rohit Sharma will work wonders for the Delhi Capitals captain, who in full flow is a treat to watch.
