India vs Australia Highlights, 2nd Test, Day 1: IND 21/0 at Stumps after Mohammed Shami picks 4 to bowl out AUS for 263

Loose from Shami and Lyon capitalises. Nathan Lyon has always been a very useful tail end batter and shows an example of that by shifting to his backfoot and punchung it through point. 

Shami bowls full and Lyon leans into the drive. He slips while returning from the non-striker's end but he didn't need to do any of that as the ball trickled away to the boundary. 

Shami has been brought back, possibly with the express purpose of troubling Lyon. It is Peter Handscomb on strike but he ends up taking a single off the first ball. Australia 236/8. 

Axar drops it wide on the crease and short, Handscomb  slashes hard and the ball flies off the outside edge right in front of the face of Kohli. No way that could have been caught, the ball runs to the boundary. Australia 233/8.

As has been the case earlier in this innings, one wicket leads to another. The turn back in does Murphy completely and the ball takes the middle stump.

That is that for the Ausralian captain, caught plumb in front. He takes the review but it is more out of hope than anything else. Full from Jadeja, it slides and beat's Cummins's inside edge. Middle stump would have been disturbed.

What an innings this has been from Handscomb. He looked good in the first innings of the first Test but couldn't quite reach a fifty to show for it. Not this time. It has come at a good click as well, in just 48 balls. 

Handscomb plays it late and the ball from Jadeja races away to the boundary. He has moved to 49 himself. This stand has 

Siraj again and this time, it goes to the boundary. A real London bridge moment for him, the ball goes through his hands between his feet and past him. Australia 208/6. 

A single off Shami brought the first run of the session. A fumble from Mohammed Siraj allowed the batters to run one more off the last ball of the over. 

Axar bowled the first over of the session and Shami is bowling from the other end. No runs yet to Cummins or Handscomb and so Australia remain 199/6. 

This session could prove to be make or break for the Australians. They are 199/6 and if they manage to somehow not lose too many wickets while scoring at a similar rate to the second session, they can put up a very good total to defend indeed. 

105 runs in that session. Partnership between Peter Handscomb and Pat Cummins has reached 31 off 54 balls. Australia need this rearguard action and much more to based on the evidence in the first Test. This partnership has poised this Test at a fascinating juncture. 

The next ball is full and Cummins forces it through midwicket. Sensational batting from the Australian captain, they are now on 199. 

Cummins gets one on the pads, he glances it off very fine for a four. No one standing any chance at chasing that one. 

10 minutes to tea and Rohit tosses the ball to Mohammed Siraj. Can Handscomb and Cummins see Australia through? They are 189/6, Cummins is 15 off 21 balls, Handscomb on 34 off 73.

What a hand the Australian captain is playing here. Slog sweeps Ashwin over deep midwicket for a big six. Australia have reached 188/6, that 200-run mark very much achievable now. 

That was unexpected. Cummins charges down the ground to the tossed up delivery from Ashwin and pumps the ball down the ground over the bowler's head. 

Australia have lost wickets in doubles, in the way that they have lost two wickets in quick succession whenever they have come. One gets a feeling that it is bound to be more than that if one of these two get out now. 

Ashwin gets the ball to bounce and straighten from round the wicket. It takes the shoulder of the bat and it goes straight into the hands of Kohli at slips. Kohli's slip catching came under scrutiny in the last match, he made no mistakes here.

Wicket No.250 for Usman Khawaja but this one really is all about KL Rahul. Khawaja middles a reverse sweep to send the ball square, Rahul moves quickly, puts in a dive and plucks the ball one-handed. That wicket has come out of nowhere, these two were looking pretty comfortable.

A four from Handscomb does the job. He takes a single later in the over to get to 25 off 41 balls while Khawaja is on 77. 

Axar Patel sends it down the leg side and Khawaja, as he has done all day long, sends it to the boundary.  Australia are on 155/4 at the end of that over, Khawaja on 77 off 121 balls. 

Khawaja splices a sweep shot off Jadeja and it goes over slip for four. Khawaja sweeps again off the stums and somehow puts it past fine leg. 

Handscomb has reached 12 off 18 balls while Khawaja is on 57 off 98. Axar Patel has been brought in, replacing Ashwin for now.  

Australia need a big partnership between Handscomb and Khawaja here. Handscomb looked good in the first innings of the first Test. 

Edged and gone! How about that, after all the talk about how Head is weak against spin, it is the pacer Shami that gets him. 

Head c Rahul b Mohammed Shami 12 (30), Australia 108/4

Head has been coming down the track to Ashwin quite a lot and this time, he smashes the ball over the bowler's head for a big six. 

A single from Khawaja off the hips takes them there. Not too many runs so far, although Head has tried a number of shots. They have mostly been grounded and found the fielders. 

Mohammed Siraj will be bowling the first over of the second session. They are 94/3 after 25 overs. Travis Head is on strike having scored one run in six balls while Usman Khawaja is at the other end on 50 off 74. 

Head is generally seen as one who struggles against spin and so it will be interesting to see just what he can do here. His current patch of good form has come after he settled into his preferred mode of batting, on an unbriddled attacking mode. 

Australia have maintained a run rate of 3.76 and this really would have been their session all the way had it not been for the two wickets that fell in Ashwin's over. Usman Khawaja has only been the luckier one, he has been beaten outside off and a number of inside edges have missed the stumps quite a few times. However, he has also been smart in the way he scored his runs and never let even half chances go without scoring.

How about that for a Test match session. Australia seemed to have done pretty well in it, until Ravichandran Ashwin came along and almost nonchalantly took off their two best batters within the space of three balls. India almost got another off the first ball of the very next over. Usman Khawaja has been a bright light for Australia and has completed a well-deserved half century. 

It has come in 71 balls. It has been a mixture of luck and skill so far from Khawaja but he certainly has looked much better than he did in the first Test. Jadeja almost took a wicket off the very first ball of this over, right after Smith fell off the last ball of the previous one. Travis Head was the man and the umpire had raises his finger after an LBW appeal. Head reviewed the call and was saved by the fact that the ball pitched outside leg. 

Ashwin has got Australia's two best batters in the same over! Ashwin pushes it wider outside off, Smith plays for the spin and gets an edge on it. KS Bharat has taken a good, sharp catch there right behind. How the game changes.

Umpire had given it not out but Rohit Sharma takes the review. Labuschagne played forward, no bat involved. Three reds on ball-tracking, Labuschagne looks absolutely livid with himself as he walks off.

The partnership between these two has reached 37 off 35 balls. Khawaja has been reached 46 off 64 while Labuschagne has scored 16 in 19. Australia are 87/1 at the start of the 22nd over. 

Jadeja brought in for the 20th over, his first of the match. Big appeal off the first ball itself against Khawaja, umpire shakes his head but Rohit Sharma decides to take the review. It pitches in line and straightens and ball-tracker shows that it would have missed leg stump. Then Khawaja whips out a reverse sweep to send the second ball for four. He moves to 44, Australia 81/1.

Ashwin had pulled out of his stride and Labuschagne reflexively got his bat inside the crease at the non-striker's end. It does look like Ashwin was looking more at if Khawaja was shaping up for a sweep or not than if he could run Labuschagne out really but the latter then proceeds to stand well behind the stumps at the non-striker's end. He gets on strike for the last ball, gives Ashwin the charges and smashes him through mid-on for a four. 

The crowd wants a contest here. Conventional sweep from Khawaja off the first ball of the 19th over bowled by Ashwin and that races to the boundary.
