There you have it. Dom Bess picks up the final wicket as Roach inside edged the ball to forward short led where Ollie Pope takes a sharp catch to mark the end of the match. England (469/9 decl and 129/3 decl) have beaten West Indies (287 and 198) by 113 runs to level series 1-1. And they did it despite en entire day getting washed out due to rain. Terrific stuff from the hosts after receiving a defeat in the first Test in Southampton.

Nine down, Eng one strike away

Stokes has another one and Alzarri Joseph will have to depart. England need one wicket and more than 12 overs still remain. West Indies are 194/9. Something’s wrong with Stokes as he moves to field in the slips. He doesn’t complete the over and Root has to bowl the remaining two balls of the over.

4, 6 and OUT!

Bowled him! Bess gets the ball to sneak between Holder’s bat and pads and West Indies lose their 8th for 183. Holder waits there for confirmation but there was no mystery there to be honest. The ball spun sharply to take the top of middle stump. Holder started the over with a dot, four and six and ends it with his wicket.

26 overs remain, England need three

Holder and Roach holding fort for West Indies. Not to say there’s no eagerness as both survived a couple of close run-out chances in the same over. The sun is shining brightly over Manchester, so you can throw away the chances of bad light or rain out of the window. As of now, this looks to be England’s game but then again, stranger things have happened. As we mention this, Holder pulls his way to a crunching boundary.

Curran strikes, Windies seven down

GONE! Curran gets the ball to move back in and Brooks is caught stone dead in front of the stumps. He goes for 62, doesn’t even review it, it looked so plumb. Committed the mistake of going on the backfoot to Curran and West Indies are 161/7. England three strikes away from victory.

West Indies hanging in

We’re down to the final 31 overs of the day. West Indies are fighting. Jason Holder has faced over 30 balls for six runs. 26 of the 30 overs are to be bowled with the old ball so if the West Indies captain and half-centurion Brooks can hang in there, WI might just be able to get away with it. England have brought Broad back on. West Indies 157/6.

Almost another wicket...

Oohhh! Close. Jason Holder almost flicks the ball to the fielder at leg slip. Stokes has been banging the ball to Holder from round the stumps and the ploy almost worked there for a moment. West Indies have to be careful since this is the last recognised pair for them. England have another 37 overs to bowl. Windies are 143/6, needing another 169 for victory.

100th Test wicket for Chris Woakes

LBW appeal and given! 100th Test wicket for Chris Woakes and a pair for Shane Dowrich. A duck in the first innings and now a nought in the second. He walks across the wicket and the ball raps Dorwich on the pads. England with consecutive strikes; need four more wickets to level the series 1-1.

Last over before tea, and WI lose Blackwood

Oh dear! Blackwood falls last over before tea. West Indies head into the interval at 137/5, requiring another 175 to win. It’s that man again, Ben Stokes, who picks up the wicket. You just cannot keep him out of action. He slams the ball onto the pitch and it ball takes off, flicking Blackwood’s gloves on its way to Jos Buttler even as the batsman tries to get away from it. Another West Indies player gets to fifty but couldn’t carry on. And just like that, the balance has once again tilted in England’s favour.

Now, Brooks gets to his half-century

A six from Brooks. What a way to get to his fifty, off 95 balls. It’s his third Test half-century. For a moment there, he must have had his heart in his mouth, because that was in the air and for a moment, it looked like Chris Woakes would get underneath it. Turns out, in the end, he’d got just enough wood on that one to take the ball over the ropes.

Fifty for Blackwood

... 81 balls, seven boundaries. It’s been a fighting knock and he’ll have to carry on if West Indies are to have a chance of surviving this one. The partnership between him and Brooks has reached 85. West Indies have done well to recover from that early wicket in this session. Another 15 minutes without a wicket will make West Indies happy and hopeful.

Great fortitude shown by Brooks and Blackwood to bring the 100 up for West Indies. Remember, they came together when the score was 37, and with this partnership they have offered a ray of hope for their team. 40 minutes to go to tea. 52 overs remain, in which England need six wickets. This promises to have a great ending.

All eyes on Brooks, Blackwood and Dowrich

Brooks and Brathwaite have added 54 runs off 88 balls to take West Indies to 91/4. With Shai Hope and Roston Chase gone, Brooks and Blackwood remain key for West Indies. Blackwood has looked the most assured WI batsman in this inning, reaching 38 of 44 with seven boundaries. Could this be the make or break partnership for the Windies? England have handed the ball to Dom Bess. Plenty of rough available for him to land the ball in.

Lifeline for Brooks. The ball hit something on its way to the keeper, probably the arm, hence the umpire turned it down. England did not take the review either, but the replay showed that although the ball did hit Brooks’ arm, it did tickle the glove before. Woakes could have had his 100th but his wait continues.

Intent from Blackwood

He’s not holding back on playing shots. He taken on Curran again, this time lofting him over the infield through the sweeper cover region for a boundary. Long way to go, but can he do it for West Indies two matches in a row? Meanwhile, Nasser Hussain has praised Broad on air for persisting with his fuller length, that’s helped him with wickets in this Test. He said: “The Broad of old would have pulled back his length after getting hit for a boundary, but now he sticks to his fuller length deliveries.” West Indies 65/4.

Three boundaries in an over for Blackwood

The hero of the first Test. Can he do it two matches in a row? He’s off to a decent start striking three fours off a Sam Curran over. The first was an upper-cut which Blackwood committed to at the last moment after deciding to pull his bat out. The next was a cover drive, which was aerial but safe. Two balls later, Blackwood kept it down and hammered the ball through extra-cover. Some intent.

OUT! Roston Chase out LBW as West Indies lose their 4th wicket for 37. Offers no shot and the umpire raises his finger. West Indies have no review left, but to be honest, it looked pretty plumb. West Indies struggling. This may end before tea itself.

Welcome back for the second session of the final day of this second Test. Based on what transpired in the first, no reason why England can’t wrap this game up before tea. The conditions are overcast and there’s movement. The ball is still fairly new with only 11 overs bowled. Chris Woakes to start proceedings, he is one strike away from 100 Test wickets.

A wonderful morning session for England, who need another seven wickets from 74 overs left in the day. West Indies have lost three wickets with Broad and Woakes denting their top-order. Broad already has five the match, and to think that England dropped him from the first Test. West Indies have a mountain in front of them. Join us for the second session in about 40 minutes.

Bowled Him! Broad cleans up Shai Hope for 7. West Indies struggling at 23/3. The ball pitches and jags back in, and Hope has played all over it. You’d get the impression that the ball stayed low the way the batsman went down but it actually hit the top of off-stump. One again, England have West Indies on the mat with the new ball. They need another 289 to win.

A wicket in the first over for England. They take the DRS and are rewarded as Campbell goes for 4. West Indies 7/1, chasing 312 to win. There was no reaction from Buttler as the ball passed Campbell’s bat and thudded onto his gloves. Only Broad and Stokes went up. The England captain took the review in the nick of time and the ultra edge showed a spike. Great call; England strike early.

England have declared their second innings on 129/3, setting West Indies 312 to win the match. Ben Stokes unbeaten on 78 off 57. West Indies need to survive 85 overs to retain the Wisden Trophy and England need 10 wickets to have a chance at reclaiming it.

Some atrocious reviews taken by West Indies

West Indies have lost three reviews in three overs and we’re not exaggerating when we say this, but Jason Holder has been pretty atrocious with his reviews. Two of them pitched way outside leg, to an extent that the commentary panel broke into a laughter and one had an inside edge from Ollie Pope’s bat. A dropped catch and some pretty poor reviews, West Indies have been all over the place this morning.

Fifty for Stokes, England’s lead over 250

Stokes’ dream Test match continues. After scoring a hundred and picking up a wicket, the England all-rounder has brought up his half-century off just 37 balls. He’s been on overdrive from the moment he’s walked out this morning and you can understand why. England 90/3, with a lead of 272 runs. We bet they’re looking at a target of 300 to set West Indies.

Sloppy from West Indies

Ben Stokes has belted a four and a six off Kemar Roach. West Indies had a chance to get him but a sloppy piece of fielding saw Campbell drop the England all-rounder. Shannon Gabriel the unfortunate bowler. The easiest of chances that you’ll see. Campbell positioned himself, got underneath it, used both arms but the ball simply went through them. Poor stuff. Stokes follows it up with another cracking boundary to take the score to 61/2, lead extended to 243.

Covers off, timely start

The hover cover has been taken off and the drizzle has stopped as well. No delayed start though. As we write this, the players have made their way out to the middle. A total of 98 overs to be bowled today, that of course depends of the two captains mutually decide to call off the game. Still long way to go for it though. Stokes has scurried on to the pitch before anyone else. England looking for some quick runs. Do not forget that it’s still pretty overcast in Manchester and the lights are on.

What should England do on final day?

Our correspondent Aritra Mukherjee says: “I think this Test match is heading for a draw unless England score 80 odd runs in 12-13 overs, give West Indies 300 to win in say 78-80 overs and they bat poorly. Lot of ifs and buts.”

Our correspondent Karan Prashant Saxena writes: “I think England need not worry about how much target they need to give, because on the final day of the Test, any target above 250 is a difficult one to chase down. England should allow Ben Stokes 5-7 overs, with clear instructions to go all Stokes on Windies bowlers. A free licence and he could quickly add about 50-70 runs. It will still leave plenty of time for Stuart Broad & co. to bowl out Windies.”

Our man Yash Bhati says, “England are heavy favourites heading into the last day. However, it is England we are about. They have the habit of saving a sinking boat. But at the same time they also have the tendency to sink a sailing boat. So you never know.”

Broad still has faith England can win this

“Everyone was thinking this game is going nowhere. It looked as if it was going to be such a dull game. Jimmy has taken 130 Test wickets since turning my age. Broad said. Why can’t I do the same? I’m hungry. My fitness record is good. Why not try to play to Jimmy’s age and emulate his success? I think I can and I think today proved that.”
