Stats
This is England’s first century stand for fourth wicket in last 25 innings and highest fourth-wicket stand since Root and Malan put together 133 at SCG in Jan 2018 Ashes
23:40 hrs IST
LBW Appeal
Huge appeal for LBW, Kemar Roach is interested. Umpire isn’t. Windies take review. Height might be the factor here. Yes, just a tad bit high. But it is umpire’s call so review is retained.
23:26 hrs IST
200 up for England
FOUR! Dom Sibley hits a boundary. He enters the 80s. England reach the 200 run mark with just three wickets lost. This is more looking like England’s day now.
23:10 hrs IST
FIFTY!
Ben Stokes reaches fifty after a day of hard work. This has not been easy batting on this surface. Also brings up 100 partnership between the two.
23:00 hrs IST
Struggling Gabriel
Shannon Gabriel has really struggled today. He did not look fit, and he has definitely strayed down the line more than once.He even gave two wides.
22:45 hrs IST
How costly would that drop be?
Gabriel had the chance to get rid of Sibley but captain Jason Holder dropped him. Sibley was batting on 68 when the moment occurred. Can he get a ton here? WI 165/3
22:40 hrs IST
Not entertaining but effective
Partnership between Ben Stokes and Dom Sibley has not been an entertaining one at all. But it certainly has been an effective one. If the duo can remain unbeaten for 20-odd overs, England will finish really strong on Day 1.
22:20 hrs IST
150 for England
Stokes hits a reverse sweep and brings up 150 for England. 150/3 England. They would be mighty pleased if they could reach somewhere close to 200 here in the day.
22:18 hrs IST
Jason Holder is off the field
Holder is feeling a little bit of niggle and he has walked off the field. Troubling signs for Windies? Shannon Gabriel is already not 100 percent.
22:10 hrs IST
Stokes starting to open his arms
It seems Ben Stokes’ patience has started to wain off a bit and he is starting to flex his muscles. This is West Indies’ chance to get him out. If he becomes comfortable here, it will only hurt the visitors.
22:00 hrs IST
Fifty run partnership
This partnership between Dom Sibley and Ben Stokes is now of 50 runs. The two have really settled down the side after Root’s departure but runs are hard to come by.
21:50 hrs IST
STAT
The last England opener before Dom Sibley to hit successive 50+ scores was Alastair Cook (71 & 147) in his final Test (vs India, The Oval, 2018).
21:37 hrs IST
50 for Sibley
It took a fair bit of time, but it has finally happened. Dom Sibley has scored his 50. He needs to free his arms more now and add some runs on the board here.
21:28 hrs IST
No runs off bat after Tea still
There have been five overs after Tea and this will please West Indies captain Jason Holder that even when they are not taking wickets, they are not allowing any runs. This will only build pressure on the hosts.
21:17 hrs IST
Back after Tea
The umpire are taking a look at the light and it seems that the light is okay. Kemar Roach will start with the ball after Lunch. Ben Stokes and Dom Sibley in the middle.
20:53 hrs IST
Tea on Day 1
That would be Tea on Day 1 here. England reach 112/3 at Tea with Dom Sibley and Ben Stokes in the middle.
20:49 hrs IST
Umpire checking lights
This is not looking good here. It is starting to get really dim and the umpires were taking a look at the light. England are 100/3.
20:45 hrs IST
100 for England
Dom Sibley is approaching his half century and England have reached the 100-run mark. This partnership is growing stronger and better.
20:25 hrs IST
Stokes key player
Ben Stokes will now be the key player for England. He has to play out the remainder of the day for England, so that they can get off to a good start by tomorrow.
20:15 hrs IST
Windies pacers keep it tight
Ben Stokes has joined Dominic Sibley in the middle and the going has been tough for both the batsmen. Joseph and Holder are keeping it very tight. Sibley has played a painstakingly slow innings but he is doing the job for his team. Stokes needs to get a few runs off his bat to break the shackles.
20:05 hrs IST
England needed more from Root
We have seen this so many times. England’s captain has failed to bail them out when the team has been in trouble. This is a major difference between Root and someone like Steve Smith, who time and again has come to Australia’s rescue.
19:58 hrs IST
Joseph removes Root
Alzarri Joseph comes into the attack and its the big wicket of the England captain. Root looked solid so far but Joseph managed to get him driving outside the off stump, it takes the outside edge and Holder completes a neat catch in the slips. England are 81/3 and in trouble now.
19:49 hrs IST
Gabriel is off
Shannon Gabriel is leaving the field after his over to get some treatment. He feels some pain in his groin, it seems. A story is developing here. We will keep you updated.
19:45 hrs IST
Joe Root in Manchester - last seven innings
Joe Root has a good record in manchester in the last seven innings and West Indies need to get him out if they want to have a good Day 1.
77, 254, 71*, 52, 49, 71 0 (last)
19:35 hrs IST
Jason Holder returns with a tidy over
Jason Holder starts off in good fashion. He did not get away too many runs and troubled Sibley a bit. He could be the key to break this partnership.
19:22 hrs IST
Partnership building
Sibley and Root have already added 29 runs between themselves and there is a partnership building here on. England will hope the two can play out the rest of the day. If that happen, England will find themselves in total control by Day 2.
19:12 hrs IST
50 up for England
Joe Root and Dom Sibley have taken England past the 50-run mark. Root is starting to look really confident in the middle and he can make a huge difference here. Windies need the wicket.
19:02 hrs IST
When Root hits a boundary
When Joe Root hits a boundary, it comes off so clean from his bat, that you just know it will travel over the ropes. Root is starting to look really good here.
18:52 hrs IST
Pressure on Joe Root
Making a return, Joe Root might be feeling all the pressure in the world right now. England are already trailing in the series, and there is no Jofra Archer in the bowling attack-up.
18:46 hrs IST
DRS call
Jason Holder has called for a review after being convinced by Kemar Roach on a LBW appeal. The impact is outside the line, poor review, and the verdict is NOT OUT!
18:41 hrs IST
No hat-trick
Aww, there was a huge turn. But Root was able to defend the hat-trick ball. Sensational stuff from Roston Chase. Joe Root will have to play a long innings here on.
18:38 hrs IST
Back after Lunch
Roston Chase is still in the attack. Zak Crawley comes out to the middle to bat with Dominic Sibley. And that’s out first ball. England are 29/2 and Chase is on a hat-trick.

Nasser Hussain reacts on Archer saga
“It is naive and silly to get it wrong because of the effort that’s gone in, and the health risk - this is a serious illness and you cannot risk infecting anyone,” Nasser Hussain told Sky Sports. “We don’t know if it was just a naivety from Jofra or if it was something more serious. He has apologised, it is a very unusual situation that we all find ourselves in and he’s made a mistake. “His team-mates will be disappointed, as will his captain Joe Root,” he said. “(But) cricketers just move on very quickly. More importantly for Joe Root, you park. Once someone’s done something like this on a Test match morning, you completely park that and leave it with management. “Joe Root will be focusing on the toss and the team. There are some difficult decisions for Joe Root, not what you need as a captain on the first morning of the Test,” he added.

OUT!
OUT! Rory Burns has been trapped by Roston Chase in his first over. He has taken review. The DRS has been taken. No bat involved. Ball tracking shows three reds, and it is gone. And that will be Lunch.
England reach 29/1 at Lunch on Day 1. Chase provides the breakthrough and Burns is the man to go. England also waste a review.
17:50 hrs IST
First boundary
Jason Holder from around the stumps, and goes towards leg. Burns just flicks it towards the backward square leg for a boundary. First boundary of the day for England.
17:45 hrs IST
Extra bounce
There is clearly more bounce on offer when Jason Holder bowls from that height. He will continue to trouble England batsmen.
17:34 hrs IST
Jason Holder into the attack
There has been a change on both ends now. Alzarri Joseph has replaced Roach, and Holder replaces Gabriel. More pace to trouble England batsmen.
17:30 hrs IST
Atherton on Archer fiasco
“It’s very foolish for a number of reasons. One, it cost him a place in the team. Secondly it’s thrown England’s plans into disarray, a vital Test match that they must win to try and win this series,” Atherton told Sky Sports.
17:20 hrs IST
HUGE APPEAL!
Rory Burns is trapped on the pads from Kemar Roach’s delivery. The umpire is not interested. It might be straying down the leg side. Yes it is. Windies don’t review this one.
17:13 hrs IST
Windies testing with pace
There has been no errors from Kemar Roach so far. He has been testing player with speed and pitching just outside off stump. Good start from Roach.
17:06 hrs IST
Shannon Gabriel on the other end
Shannon Gabriel starts with two wide bowls. The second has been adjudged illegal one and it goes for a boundary. This is not the best of starts and he does not look too pleased with himself.
17:00 hrs IST
HERE WE GO!
Rory Burns and Dom Sibley open for England. Rory Burns is on strike. Kemar Roach starts the attack for Windies. HERE WE GO!

Joe Root speaks on return
Joe Root: “We have to look ahead to the next five days and put up a good performance. We spoke to Mark and Jimmy and knew it’s a high risk to play them in back to back games. It is a must win for us, but we need to look after them as well. We can take 20 wickets and we’re looking forward to that. We have Broad, Woakes, Curran and Bess in the bowling. Firstly we need runs and need to improve there. We need to figure out how we want to play our cricket. We got ourselves where we could win the gama after being down in the first two and a half days and that gave me a lot of pleasure. It looks a very good wicket, might spin a little bit and is softer than usual. I have had a lot of time thinking about Test cricket and want to get out there and perform.”
16:49 hrs: IST
Interesting stats
This is the ninth time Jason Holder has chose to bowl in 19 Tests he had won the toss. (Won 3; Lost 5). Since Holder started captaining WI in 2015, only Kane Williamson had opted to field more often - 13 times in 17 Tests.
16:48 hrs IST
Why Holder picked bowling - Explained
Jason Holder: “We’re going to field first. Try to make use of the overhead conditions. We’ve got the same team as well. Whatever it is under the surface, we’ll try to extract it in the first session. The bowlers have pulled up quite well, expect similar things in this game from them. We’ve got to start fresh; different venue, different match. We have to learn from our mistakes in the last game and rectify it here. The last game brought a lot of smiles to the faces of our people back home and we’ll look to keep it that way.”

Toss
West Indies win the toss and opt to bowl first.

Win the toss and?
Considering the rain and overcast conditions, it won’t be such a bad idea to win the toss and field first. Both sides are heavily packed with bowlers who can make the new ball talk under these conditions. We are roughly 10 minutes away from the toss. We should get answer soon.

Weather, Toss, Match start Update
Good news coming in from Old Trafford. The covers are off and if it doesn’t rain any more then match will start in an hour from now. So, we can expect toss around 4:30 pm India time. Rain gods please stay away.

Trivia Time
One of the oldest and best ways to engage yourself while waiting for the rain to stop and a cricket match to begin is to indulge in some cricketing trivia. We all are in the digital age so many of you can surf the answer but I would request you not to do it. Be honest and tweet your answers on our handle, we will try to include the names of the first few who get this right
Q) How many bowlers picked up their 400th Test wicket in the 1990s, name them?
Interesting one! Giving a small twist to something that we all cricket fanatics know ...

Cornwall selection depends on weather
The nature of the Old Trafford pitch brought up a selection dilemma for the Windies who would otherwise want to go in unchanged. The assistance for spinners means Rahkeem Cornwall is in with a chance to play in this match. That could mean Alzarri Joseph missing out. But if it rains and stays overcast then Windies might not go in with the spinner. Although Roston Chase is a decent spinner.
15:20 hrs IST
Umpires on the field and so is the super sopper
Here is a latest photo from the Old Trafford in Manchester where it is still wet and rainy and the toss has been delayed. There could be a delay for around an hour and a half.

15:15 hrs IST
Lengthy delay expected
Some bad news for the fans. There could be a lengthy delay as word coming from the ground is that it might take 90 minutes to get the pitch ready after it stops raining completely. The umpires inspected the playing conditions a little while back and there still no word on when the toss will take place.
15:10 hrs IST
Toss becomes tricky
No one wants to bat fourth at Old Trafford because the pitch tends to turn square on the last day. That is why the temptation for the Windies to play Rahkeem Cornwall could be there. But with this weather now, the captains will be in two minds as they might want to bowl first and get some early strikes in, in helpful conditions. For all those who feel toss should be done away with, think again! What an amazing facet of cricket the coin toss is.

Drizzle has stopped - Report
So there are some reports which suggest the drizzle has stopped and the toss has been delayed due to wet outfield. This si a relief. Modern drainage facilities are brilliant and if it doesn’t rain then we could have toss and action pretty soon.
15:00 hrs IST
Toss Delayed
Not that this is any breaking news but just to put the official word out, toss has been delayed due to the slight drizzle that just wouldn’t stop. This is really disappointing because the stage is set for a fabulous contest. We will keep you updates about the latest developments from Old Trafford.

Weather Update
Reports suggest it is still drizzling at Manchester and this could mean a delay in toss. Just a little under 10 minutes to go and the covers are on. This isn’t good news as it seems there will be a delay.
14:40 hrs: IST
New-look pace attack for hosts
England have already handed out ‘rests’ to Anderson and Wood, so Broad will play along side Chris Woakes and Sam Curran. It could be good in a way as these bowlers will be fresh and they won’t have the baggage of losing the last Test.
14:30 hrs: IST
It has started to drizzle
What are the chances! All set for a great battle and it starts to drizzle just half an hour before toss. Reports suggest it is a mild one as of now. We will have to wait and watch. Fans will be praying for the match to start on time.
14:20 hrs: IST
Pressure on Broad?
Stuart Broad is expected to start now and there could be some pressure on him to perform. The pressure will not be from the point of him not having had a good run, but the fact that a lot of people put the onus of England losing the first Test on Broad’s absence could add the extra burden on the medium pacer. He is an experienced customer though. Broad’s former teammate Graeme Swann had said yesterday that if England needs to win they need to play Anderson and Broad together.
14:10 hrs: IST
History awaits the West Indies
Jason Holder’s men have a chance to put an end to the 32-year-old wait for a series win in England. The last time West Indies won a series in England was back in 1988. If they beat England in this Test match then they will take the series 2-0 with the last match turning out to be inconsequential one in terms of the series result.
14:00 hrs IST
Manchester weather update
Thankfully there are no major concerns of rain like it was in the first two days at Southampton. But the conditions will be overcast for the first two days with chances of showers too but that is pretty normal during a Test match in England.
13:50 hrs IST
Joe Root returns
The Archer news hours before the toss has shifted focus from Joe Root. England’s regular captain is set to return in this Test match after missing the first Test due to birth of his second child. Root will replace Joe Denly at No.3. The latter has been dropped after a string of average scores in Test cricket.
13:40 hrs IST
Who will replace Archer?
England had already announced that James Anderson and Mark Wood will be rested for this game. Stuart Broad and Chris Woakes are certain to play in place of Anderson and Wood but now with Archer out, the door opens for left-arm medium pacer Sam Curran and uncapped Ollie Robinson.
13:30 hrs IST
Archer omitted from team
Some breaking news coming in straightaway. Archer was due to start the second Test for England but has been excluded for breaking England’s bio-secure protocols. He will now undergo a five-day isolation period before taking two Covid-19 tests.
