Lok Sabha elections 2019: Ambedkar Nagar constituency in UP was once a BSP bastion
This constituency, which was called Akbarpur earlier, has five assembly segments of Goshainganj, Katehari, Tanda, Jalalpur and Akbarpur.
The Ambedkar Nagar parliamentary constituency in Uttar Pradesh was created in 2008 after the Delimitation Commission’s recommended the restructuring of the seat.
This constituency, which was called Akbarpur earlier, has five assembly segments of Goshainganj, Katehari, Tanda, Jalalpur and Akbarpur.

The Bahujan Samaj Party’s chief Mayawati won four times from the seat, when Akbarpur was a reserved constituency for Scheduled Castes. The Ambedkar Nagar Lok Sabha was a stronghold of the BSP and it has won the elections from 1989, except in 1991 and 2007.
In the first election held after delimitation in 2009, Rakesh Pandey of the BSP won the Ambedkarnagar Lok Sabha seat and the BJP’s Hari Om Pandey bagged it in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.

It is a largely rural constituency with Scheduled Caste communities accounting for over 1/4th of the population. Muslims, Yadavs, Kurmis, Brahmins and Banias also form significant blocks of voters as do Rajbhar and Kewats.
Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of members to Parliament at 80, will go to polls in all the seven phases of the Lok Sabha election 2019. Votes will be counted on May 23.
