Lok Sabha 2019 constituency: Uttar Pradesh’s Sambhal was once SP’s bastion

The Sambhal Lok Sabha seat in Uttar Pradesh is considered to be the Samajwadi Party’s stronghold.

Mulayam Singh Yadav, the SP’s patriarch, won the general election from the constituency in 1998. In 2004, Mulayam’s brother Ram Gopal Yadav successfully contested from Sambhal.

The Bahujan Samaj Party won the Sambhal seat in 2009 when Shafiqur Rahman Barq won as its candidate. However, he lost to Satyapal Singh Saini of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2014 Lok Sabha election when he fought as an SP nominee.

This year, Shafiqur Rahman Barq is the candidate for the SP-BSP alliance, the BJP has fielded Parmeshwar Lal Saini and Major JP Singh has been nominated by the Congress party.

Uttar Pradesh, which sends the maximum number of members to Parliament at 80, will go to polls in all the seven phases of the Lok Sabha election 2019. Votes will be counted on May 23.
