The Bahujan Samaj Party has won the Sitapur seat in the Awadh region of the state thrice since the 1999 elections but lost to the Bharatiya Janata Party in the Lok Sabha election in 2014. Rajesh Verma, the sitting member of Parliament from Sitapur, has won the seat twice before on a BSP ticket. In 2009, Kaisar Jahan won the seat on a BSP ticket and joined the Congress after being expelled from the Mayawati-led party.

This year BJP will face a major challenge mainly from the BSP-SP alliance as well as the Congress on the Sitapur Lok Sabha seat, which is 80 kilometres from the state capital of Lucknow.
