All the ten parliamentary constituencies in Haryana will vote in the sixth round of the seven-phased Lok Sabha election on May 12. The votes will be counted on May 23.

Electors in Haryana’s Sonipat parliamentary constituency have voted out two of the state’s influential leaders former deputy prime minister Chaudhary Devi Lal and four-time lawmaker Chiranji Lal.

Devi Lal and Chiranji Lal never contested any election after they lost from the Sonipat Lok Sabha seat, near the National Capital Territory. Devi Lal won from the seat in 1980 and lost in the next Lok Sabha election in 1984 to Dharam Pal Singh Malik, who was contesting for the first time.

Congress’ Chiranji Lal, who represented Karnal in the Lok Sabha for 15 years from 1980 to 1996, fought the general election from the Sonipat seat, which is dominated by the Jat community, in 1999 unsuccessfully.

This year, Indian National Lok Dal supremo Om Prakash Chautala’s grandson Digvijay Chautala would take on two-time chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, who had defeated his great grandfather Devi Lal, thrice from the Rohtak Lok Sabha seat. He will contest as the Jannayak Janta Party candidate in alliance with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

There are nine assembly segments — Ganaur, Rai, Kharkhauda (SC), Sonipat, Gohana, Baroda, Julana, Safidon and Jind — under the Sonipat Lok Sabha seat. Seven of these nine assembly segments are held by opposition parties.
