Lok Sabha 2019 constituency: Kolkata Dakshin is a Trinamool pocket borough

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee held the Kolkata Dakshin Lok Sabha seat for 20 years between 1991 and 2011 as a Congress and Trinamool Congress candidate.

In 2011, senior Trinamool Congress leader Subrata Bakshi won a by-poll after Mamata Banerjee’s resignation and her subsequent selection to the state assembly from the Bhabanipur. Subrata Bakshi defeated his nearest rival Ritabrata Banerjee of the CPI(M) by 230,099 votes. Bakshi broke the record of Mamata Banerjee, who had won the seat in 2009 by 219,571 votes.

Subrata Bakshi successfully contested again from the Kolkata Dakshin Lok Sabha seat in the 2014 general election. He has been replaced by the ruling party with Mala Roy in the Lok Sabha election 2019.

Voting in the Kolkata Dakshin Lok Sabha seat will take place in the last and seventh phase on May 19. The result will be declared on May 23.
