The Machhlishahr Lok Sabha seat is held by the Bharatiya Janata Party, which won it for the first time in 1996 and then again in 1998.

The Machhlishahr Lok Sabha seat was held by the Bharatiya Janata Party after Lok Sabha elections 2014, which won it for the first time in 1996 and then again in 1998. After that, the Samajwadi Party has bagged the seat twice in 1999 and 2009 and the Bahujan Samaj Party was successful once in 2004.

Nishad, a community of fishermen and members of Scheduled Castes, are found in large numbers in this constituency. Kurmis and Yadavs are also found in significant numbers in this constituency.

The Machhlishahr parliamentary constituency comprises five assembly segments of Machhlishahr, Mariyahu, Zafrabad, Kerakat and Pindra.
